Wouldn’t you like to find and sing harmony parts yourself? This is the workshop for you! Marcy will lead you through a step-by-step approach to finding harmonies using the Major Scale and identifying Interval Notes. We’ll use simple songs, find the Melodic Pattern and add our harmony parts.

Cathy will present a systematic approach to right hand drills that will help your right hand accuracy, tone and timing. Banjos in hand, we’ll be learning these drills and addressing problems and issues you may have with right hand technique.
Cathy Fink, known for her great old-time banjo playing and supportive teaching, won the Clifftop Banjo Contest in 2018. Don’t miss her concert with Marcy Marxer on Thursday at 8:30PM.

DESCRIPTION
A full day of workshop fun for Baritone Ukes and DGBE Tuned Tenor Guitars! Sharpen your skills on this beautiful instrument that is growing in popularity. The three main workshops are intended for players at an intermediate level and above on the baritone uke. Beginners and students earlier in their baritone study are welcome to join those three workshops, but the pace of classes will be set at intermediate. Classes are available a la carte or you can buy the whole day pass to attend them all.

12pm – Classic Folk Fingerpicking with Aaron Keim:
Join Aaron as he teaches fingerpicking for the baritone ukulele, based on classic folk music recordings. Elizabeth Cotten, Frank Proffitt, Doc Watson and Merle Travis will be our guides for this workshop.
2pm – Melody Magic with Marcy Marxer
Marcy will lead a guided romp through familiar melodies using selections from Folk, Jazz and Pop tunes. There will be a written Score, TAB, Chord Charts and Play-Along Tracks provided for each tune. Please print or download the materials before class.
4pm – String of Pearls/Fingerboard Mapping with Ginger Johnson
Take a deep dive into one key, finding chord patterns that unlock a mysterious map of the fingerboard. A smidge of theory and a dollop of Ginger’s baritone secrets make playing these frequent intervals easy as moving just one finger.
7:30pm – 9pm Jam Session followed by Staff Concert
From Appalachia to China- Cathy & Marcy are joined by versatile Chinese Classical Hammered Dulcimer player Chao Tian for an evening of traditional and contemporary Americana and Chinese music.
Relax! I practice every day. Practice with me! We’ll build an outline in class that meets each player’s specific needs for a 10 minute daily practice.
Cathy & Marcy join a wonderful cast of sisters including Emma’s Revolution, Bev Grant, Luci Murphy and many more.
The concert is hosted by the Labor Heritage Foundation. Tickets are whatever you can afford, and free tickets are available, contributions welcome.
In Swing, Western Swing, and Classic Country, it’s exciting to take a guitar lead break. Knowing the chords is a good start, but how do you play around with the melody or improvise? Marcy will teach you several fundamental techniques to get started, including playing out of chord positions, springboarding from scales, crossing strings, and more. Different tunes and songs than at previous FHO festivals.
Fiddle Hell Online on April 7-10, 2022, includes an epic online lineup of 35 live concerts, 35 live jam sessions, and 180 live workshops, for fiddle, mandolin, cello, guitar, old-time banjo, and singing. Other instruments and listeners are also welcome! There are many new instructors and performers, and new sessions. All concerts, jams, and workshops will be replayable for 4 months (through August 11, 2022).
Registration is open! There are discounts of 10% for seniors, young adults, kids, and American String Teachers Association (ASTA) members, and additional discounts of 10% for early birds.

Cathy & Marcy headline the one-day festival which will include workshops by top teaching artists as well as performances and a community play along. Teaching artists this year are Marcy Marxer, Cathy Fink, Gerald Ross, Cynthia Kinnunen, Eve Goldberg, and Ben Hassenger. Local ukulele celebrity Jim Beloff, will be on hand signing copies of his books. A luthier will be available to look at attendees’ instruments and we will be raffling off some donated ukulele items.

Hank Williams’ brief career epitomized the country song.
