Cathy Fink, known for her great old-time banjo playing and supportive teaching, won the Clifftop Banjo Contest in 2018. She’ll teach you a driving old-time tune, “Briar Picker Brown,” which brings smiles to players’ faces at the Clifftop jams. It’s in the key of D, using double C tuning. The tune source is Buddy Thomas, whose first instrument was banjo even though he’s known as a fiddler.

With Cathy, it’s not just about the notes, but also the right- and left-hand techniques to make your playing clear, rhythmic, and exciting.

The inimitable Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are an eclectic folk festival on their own terms. Their superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the guitar, five-string banjo, ukulele, mandolin and cello-banjo. The duo has released 48 recordings, won recognition as both songwriters and tradition bearers, and opened doors for countless other musicians. From social justice to the history of women in country music, Django style jazz to bluegrass and old time music, they are a rare eclectic duo that ties it all together-past, present and future. The Boston Globe called them  “Spellbinding acoustic musicians, with a rare mastery of American roots style”, and Billboard Magazine noted that Fink and Marxer are“as close to flawless folk/bluegrass as it gets.”
