Cathy Fink, known for her great old-time banjo playing and supportive teaching, won the Clifftop Banjo Contest in 2018. She’ll teach you a driving old-time tune, “Briar Picker Brown,” which brings smiles to players’ faces at the Clifftop jams. It’s in the key of D, using double C tuning. The tune source is Buddy Thomas, whose first instrument was banjo even though he’s known as a fiddler.

With Cathy, it’s not just about the notes, but also the right- and left-hand techniques to make your playing clear, rhythmic, and exciting.

Her songs have been featured on NPR as commentaries and have helped propel the SHOUT AND SHINE diversity movement in the bluegrass world. She has been nominated for 12 consecutive GRAMMY Awards and her two GRAMMY’s say “Artist, Engineer, Producer”, but the title she likes best is “Social Music Conductor.” www.cathymarcy.com
