Confident Beginner Through Advanced – Soprano/Concert/Tenor/Baritone & Bass Uke Friendly

6 sessions on Tuesdays from 7:30-9pm Jan. 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23

$180 – sliding scale available, simply email info@cathymarcy.com

Play well with others! In this uniquely designed class, confident beginners will get the focused first half hour of the lesson and then they are encouraged to “sit in” on the rest of the lesson which will move at a faster pace.

From 7:30-8pm, Confident Beginners will primarily be learning to hold down the rhythm section. Other participants are welcome to join in learning the chord progressions at a slower pace.

From 8pm-9:00pm, Intermediate and Advanced parts of the repertoire will be taught. These will become multi-part leads and for more advanced players, may also have spaces for solos.

Repertoire will tentatively be:

Don’t Fence Me In
Blue Skies
Five Foor Two

Each student will get two practice rhythm tracks for each selection, one at a slower tempo and one at performance tempo. Chord charts and lyrics will also be provided via PDF.  Classes will be taught via Zoom and archived online for viewing by participants.

For those who can & want to have a Virtual Performance, I will send instructions for making a video or your part and sending it to a video editor. Virtual class performance will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube date TBD, along with some surprises.

Students who want personalized instruction on this repertoire may book solo 30 minute zoom sessions with Marcy for $25 each.

We’re putting the FUN into FUN-DRAISING! We are two folksingers trying to do the near impossible- raise $100,000 for the production, filming, marketing & distribution of Marcy’s musical theater piece, ALL WIGGED OUT, about her cancer experience. We’re headed to Chicago in July to work with the EMMY Award winning, PBS favorite, HMS Media to film in front of a safe and vaccinated audience.

The Fundraiser is on GoFundMe here: https://gofund.me/1dff80e9 – along with all of the details. ALL donations are tax deductible thanks to our fiscal sponsor, the Institute of Musical Traditions.

We are scheduling ZOOM Fundraising Concerts with the songs from ALL WIGGED OUT, Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout June – 3, 8,10, 15, 22, 24.

Each concert requires a commitment of raising $1000 minimum-amongst the friends that YOU invite and you can invite as many as you want! Either you gather the donations into one lump sum paid on the GoFundMe here: https://gofund.me/1dff80e9, or keep track of individual donations from your friends there, OR contact us for info on sending a check directly to the Institute of Musical Traditions.

Do you want to host one of these and invite your friends? Or host together with friends? If you don’t host on ZOOM, we can do that part and provide a link. We can also flex on the time of the show to your convenience.  Contact: info@cathymarcy.com

Rhythm guitar is fine, but what about taking a solo break on guitar?  Drawing on bluegrass and oldtime tunes and songs, Marcy will teach you to flatpick a technically solid and ear-pleasing solo break. She’ll show you how to play out of chord positions, add classic riffs, syncopate the rhythm, and improvise in a few places. Different tunes than at the April FHO.

In Swing, Western Swing, and Classic Country, it’s exciting to take a guitar lead break. Knowing the chords is a good start, but how do you play around with the melody or improvise? Marcy will teach you several fundamental techniques, including using the higher reaches of the fingerboard, playing out of chord positions, springboarding from scales, crossing strings, and more. Different tunes and songs than at FHO in April.

Cathy Fink, known for her great old-time banjo playing and supportive teaching, won the Clifftop Banjo Contest in 2018. She’ll teach you a driving old-time tune, “Briar Picker Brown,” which brings smiles to players’ faces at the Clifftop jams. It’s in the key of D, using double C tuning. The tune source is Buddy Thomas, whose first instrument was banjo even though he’s known as a fiddler.

With Cathy, it’s not just about the notes, but also the right- and left-hand techniques to make your playing clear, rhythmic, and exciting.
